The Downsides of Staying at a Disney World Resort

Staying at a Disney World resort can have some great benefits however in this article, we are going to discuss some of the downsides of staying at some Disney World Resorts.

  • “Free” transportation at the resort is nice however this is not a fast means of transportation. Some of the waits can be very aggravating and sometimes you will have to stand.
  • Haphazard Room Assignment – If you are in a very large group like a family with multiple rooms, your group with multiple rooms may be split apart during the busy season. Requests for specific locations aren’t always honored.
  • Disney World resorts are so large (often around 2000 rooms) that Disney charges more money for “Preferred” rooms closer to the lobby.
  • Safes in the rooms are very tiny. If you’re planning on bringing a laptop, it will not for.
  • Rates are anywhere from 40%-70% high than off property rooms of comparable quality.
  • Disney World has 3 categories for rooms; Deluxe, Moderate, & Value. The more “affordable” a room at an actual Disney property is, the more you could use a rental car. A lot of these so called Disney value rooms are just as far as many off properties hotels. Some of the “value resorts” are a solid 15 minutes away from the Magic Kingdom itself.
  • The Value class rooms mentioned above are great for people who “must stay” at a Disney property however the rooms are very basic. Disney World has more value rooms than many mid sized cities have in total. These rooms can range from $100-$250 however for this price you’d be better staying in a nicer room not on Disney property. The moderate properties may feel more “resort like” with more pools and slides and whatnot however the bedrooms themselves are pretty similar.
  • No moderate or value Disney resort is connected by the monorail. A car or bus is your only option to go to the Magic Kingdom

Disney Dining: Reservation or No Reservation?

If there is a particular Walt Disney World restaurant you want to have dinner at, make certain to make dinner reservations as soon as possible. In-demand tables fill up sometimes weeks early.

For example, Magic Kingdom’s Be Our Guest is notoriously difficult to be a guest at, and so is the tiny Le Cellier Steakhouse in Epcot’s Canada pavilion.

Epcot: Turtle Talk With Crush

If you’re planning to visit Epcot, make sure to check out Turtle Talk With Crush. You’ll find this after riding the Finding Nemo ride. This is a fun interactive show where kids can have a conversation with Crush the turtle from Disney Pixar’s Finding Nemo.

Epcot The Seas
This is inside a large building that also houses an enormous aquarium. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to walk around and look into all of the tanks. There are tiny tanks as well as massive tanks with sharks, sea turtles, manatees, and other fish.

Make sure to go upstairs for beautiful views! The tanks in this building are massive (5.7 million gallons) and are not to be missed.

Disney World Character Meals

If you want to see, take pictures, and interact with various Disney characters, we definitely recommend that you schedule a Disney character meal. Although they’re kind of pricey, you will get into the parks before other people, eat, and interact/take pictures with at least five characters at each venue. This will save a considerable amount of time waiting in line elsewhere in the park.

Below is a list of locations that feature Disney character meals:

Tips For An Affordable Disney World Vacation

Taking the ultimate Disney World vacation does not have to be exorbitantly expensive if you know what you are doing. The more alert you are and the more you plan out your vacation before embarking on it, the more money you will find yourself saving at the most magical place on Earth.

If you happen to be celebrating your birthday or even an anniversary at Disney World, this is something you will want to make the cast members aware of. To encourage people to visit Disney World for such occasions, guest services will give you a birthday button if you can prove to them that your birthday or anniversary is that day. Though there are times when this results in nothing more than congratulations from random cast members, some lucky guests find themselves a recipient of a free FastPass, or at the very least, a free dessert.

Depending on which parks you plan to visit while at Disney World you can enjoy some extra perks if you happen to be a member of AAA. For example, Downtown Disney’s Earl of Sandwich will give you a 15% discount on your bill if you can show them a valid AAA membership card. Annual passholders also get a discount at Earl of Sandwich, but only 10%. Though you won’t be able to combine the discounts you’ll still save a little more than you would without knowledge of Earl of Sandwich’s practices.Earl of Sandwich Disney

The Earl of Sandwich is also a great restaurant to dine at because if you join their eClub you receive a free brownie as a thank you. In addition you get a coupon that you can redeem for a free sandwich if you happen to be visiting on your birthday or can come back to the park that day.

However, if you are an annual passholder and you are visiting Disney World with a group of people, you should get a 15% discount on any of the tours offered. Many guests don’t realize that their status as a passholder can save money for their family and friends too.

You may find yourself craving fish & chips if you visit Epcot Center. The best place to get your fish & chips fix is a food stand called the Yorkshire County Fish Shop. Though there is a full service restaurant next to the food stand, you can get the same fish & chips from the food stand for less money. In the majority of eateries at Disney World you can also save money on your food if you simply order an entrée by itself, without the included sides.

One activity that many visitors to Disney World consider a must see is the nightly fireworks display. To avoid paying park admission just to view it head over to the Polynesian’s beach; you will have an amazing view of the fireworks without having to pay to see them.
